German Glühwein

German Mulled Wine from Christmas Markets

Ingredients

Qty 2x 4x Ingredient
1 ea 2 ea 3 L¹ 750 ml bottle Red Wine (Merlot)
1 ea 2 ea 4 ea Orange, organic, sliced in 8
1 ea 2 ea 4 ea Lemon, organic, sliced in 8
½ cup 1 cup 2 cups Sugar
2 cups 1 qt 2 qt Grape Juice
5 ea 10 ea 20 ea Cloves, whole
1 ea 2 ea 4 ea Bay Leaf
1 ea 2 ea 4 ea Star Anise
10 ea 20 ea 40 ea Juniper Berries
1 ea 2 ea 4 ea stick Cinnamon

Preparation

  1. Heat the sugar in a large pot and until it melts; allow to carmelize to medium brown
  2. Slowly add the grape juice (it will steam and be loud for a moment) and stir to allow the caramelized sugar to dissolve
  3. Add the orange, lemon, and spices.
  4. Simmer about 15 minutes, then reduce the heat.
  5. Add the wine, make sure the temperature of the Glühwein doesn't exceed 70°C / 158°F.
  6. Remove the fruits and spices.
  7. Serve hot in a mug, maybe add some honey and stir with a stick of cinnamon.
